Adventure #2 San Jose, Costa Rica. If you’re ever planning on coming to Costa Rica, skip San Jose. Honestly. Don’t even drive through it. There is nothing to see. It sort of reminded me of East LA. Actually no; it was worse. Just parking was a bit suspect. We drove up on Avenida 2 and parked outside a store completely barred up inside. As we walked down the main street, Avenida 2, there wasn't much to see. Parque Central in front of Catedral Metropolitana had loads of Costa Ricans catching some sun light. Many congregants of the Church - which was a Sunday when we visited - were exiting as the service had just ended. After a quick peak inside, we head over to the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica. The theater was very beautiful. Unfortunately there were no shows for the day, so after a quick few snaps of the nice marble layout inside, we decided it was time to head over to the second part of the day trip. Cartago, Costa Rica. We hopped back in the car and drove about 20 minutes over to Cartago. Cartago is a city as well as a province in San Jose which sits nearly a mile high. First stop: Ruinas de la Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol. The story behind the ruins is pretty deep. It goes something like this; There were two brothers who, for whatever reason, despised each other. One day, one of the brothers saw the other, and killed him in the Church. Due to this mortal sin, an earthquake occurred and destroyed the church. It was rebuilt, then destroyed again by an earthquake. Ever since, they decided never to rebuild the church. Next: Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles.
This Church was absolutely beautiful. Inside and out. And it was packed. I'd highly recommend to come on a Sunday to visit to see it in full effect. Apparently, every year sometime in August, congregants of the Church migrate by foot from their homes to the church. It is a sacred Church with an interesting folklore behind it. I don't want to ruin it, so I'd advise you check it out. Once we were done checking everything out, we stopped by Restaurante Mi Tierra for some lengua. Yum.
